Certification of individuals and development teams

TTE CERTIFIED logo

Development of high-integrity embedded systems involves use of appropriate development processes, software tools and hardware platforms — but it also requires that the people involved have relevant experience and qualifications.

In many ways, this requirement may seem like common sense, but modern standards now make this requirement explicit, requiring that organisations can provide evidence of compliance.

For example, ISO 26262 (2011) requires that there should be a “safety culture” within the organisation:

The organisation shall create, foster, and sustain a safety culture that supports and encourages the effective achievement of functional safety.” [ISO 26262-2 (2011), Section 5.4.2.1.]

This standard provides suggestions for various ways in which an organisation can demonstrate that it has created such a safety culture: these include being able to demonstrate that people doing a particular piece of work have “the competence commensurate with the activity assigned”.

One way of demonstrating appropriate levels of competence is through use of an appropriate, rigorous, process of staff training and certification.

TTE Certified” programmes

We offer cost-effective Certification Programmes for developers (and organisations) that wish to be able to demonstrate their ability to create reliable embedded systems.

Two programmes are currently available:

A third programme will be available from late February 2012:

Guide to the “TTE Certified” programme

You will find further information in our Guide to the MSc in Reliable Embedded Systems and the “TTE Certified” programme.

A video linked to this guide is available on our YouTube® channel.

Routes to certification

TTE Certification Programmes can be completed:

Please note:

  • The certification programmes are rigorously assessed by means of formal (written) examinations, under controlled conditions (usually in British Council offices);
  • The examination standard is high (equivalent to a “Distinction” level in the corresponding MSc programme);
  • You may be able to complete the programme more quickly by attending ‘live’ classes (rather than by DL) — but exactly the same examination process and standard applies for everyone on the programme, regardless of their location or study method.

How does the TTE Certification Programme operate if I study on a “DL” basis?

You can complete our Certification Programme by taking up to six advanced training modules on a “Distance Learning” basis.

The DL version of this programme operates in three stages:

  • You take the first module. If you achieve the required standard, you will become a “TTE Certified ‘Embedded C’ Programmer”. The fee for this module is £250.
  • If you achieve the “Programmer” standard, you then have the option of taking a second module, at a cost of £350. If you achieve the required standard, you will become a “TTE Certified Software Engineer (Reliable Embedded Systems)”.
  • If you achieve the “Software Engineer” standard, you then have the option of taking the remaining 4 modules, at a total cost of a further £1400 (paid on a “per module” basis, at £350 per module). If you pass all of these modules at the required standard, you will become a “TTE Certified Senior Developer (Reliable Embedded Systems)”.

The total cost of taking all 6 modules in this way, on a DL basis, is £2000. However, you can stop at any point (for example, after the first module) if you wish.

All stated costs are subject to UK VAT (at 20%) for candidates from the EU.

Certification for individuals and organisations

In many cases, individual developers join this programme to demonstrate their abilities, increase their salaries and improve their job prospects.

In other cases, organisations wish to demonstrate their commitment to the creation of high-quality, reliable products by ensuring that their whole development team is made up of well-qualified developers with up-to-date skills.

Where required, we can provide assistance to organisations that wish to prepare teams for certification: please contact us for details.

International Certification Centres

We will open a number of International Certification Centres in 2012.

TTE Systems Certification Centre (Lahore)

Our first International Certification Centre will open in Lahore, Pakistan in February 2012.

Through this new centre, residents of Pakistan will be able to obtain extensive support as they complete their certification programmes.

Within Pakistan, you can also take your certification exam in the British Council Offices in the following cities:

  • Karachi
  • Multan
  • Faisalabad

Please contact us for further information about certification in Pakistan.

Other International Certification Centres

Certification centres will open in other countries later in 2012.

Details will be released on this WWW site in March 2012.
