MSc Studentships in the UK

  • Are you a graduate in engineering, computer science or a related field?
  • Do you have a strong academic background (minimum 2.2 Honours degree)?
  • Would you like to obtain a high-quality MSc qualification in embedded systems, along with practical work experience in this area?
  • Are you either (i) from the UK or EU, or (ii) living in the UK with permits, etc, which allow you to work full time for the next two years?

If so, we may be able to help you.

We are working in partnership with the University of Leicester to deliver a two-year (part-time) MSc in Reliable Embedded Systems.

We have been approached by representatives of several companies who are interested in offering fully-sponsored places on this programme to suitably-qualified applicants from outside their own organisations. We are also recruiting for studentships sponsored by TTE Systems.

Sponsored places cover all University fees and provide you with an income (£12k / year: not a fortune, but our understanding is that it is not liable to tax). They also provide high-quality work experience in the sponsoring organisation.

We expect that most of the sponsored students will gain an MSc qualifification and a job offer from the sponsoring organisation after approximately two years.

Current vacancies: TTE Systems

We are currently recruiting for sponsored places with TTE Systems. We have a number of studentships available: these will be based in our Leicester (UK) office and in our new Penang (Malaysia) office.

Please note that previous experience in the development of embedded systems is not a pre-requisite for these positions (but experience with Java would be useful).

We will be conducting the next set of interviews in mid March.

Please contact us as soon as possible if you are interested in a sponsored position with TTE Systems.

Current vacancies: Other companies

Not all sponsoring companies wish to advertise their positions.

Even if no current sponsors are listed, we invite you to contact us to discuss possible vacancies.

Current sponsor: Aero Engine Controls

We have now completed the current recruitment round for sponsored places with Aero Engine Controls (a joint venture between Rolls Royce and Goodrich). No further applications will be accepted by this sponsor at the present time.

We expect to have further places available with AEC in 2011.

How to apply for a sponsored place on the MSc programme

To apply for a sponsored place, please proceed as follows:

  • Please contact us and tell us a little about your qualifications and previous experience (if any).
  • If we think you have a reasonable chance of obtaining sponsorship, we will ask you to provide a short CV.
  • We will review your CV and - if you meet the requirements - we will forward it to one of our sponsoring companies: if you are shortlisted for a studentship, you will then be interviewed by telephone or in person (by the company) as part of the selection process.
  • If you receive a provisional offer of sponsorship, you then need to apply for a place on the MSc programme in Reliable Embedded Systems. Please note that you cannot receive a formal contract for sponsorship until you have received an offer of a place on the MSc programme from the University.

Overall, the process is more straightforward than it sounds (with minimal paperwork required).

Further information is available about the application process for the MSc programme.

Further information about sponsored MSc places

Sponsored MSc places operate as follows:

  • The sponsor pays all University fees for the full (2-year) programme (subject to satisfactory progress).
  • The sponsor provides a maintenance award of £12k / year for 2 years (subject to satisfactory progress). Our understanding is that this award is tax free.
  • You will undertake a work placement in the sponsoring company for the duration of the MSc programme: during this time you will complete your MSc project.
  • You will have the opportunity to apply for a UK job with the sponsoring company at the end of the MSc programme.

Interested in sponsoring a place on the MSc programme?

As noted above, we believe that studentships can prove extremely beneficial to both students and sponsoring companies. For example, for companies who wish to bring in new blood to enhance existing development teams, sponsorship of student places can be a realistic (and cost effective) solution in the present economic climate.

We are always happy to hear from companies who would like to sponsor places on this MSc programme. Please contact us for further information.
